Using Edge Vent for Proper Attic Ventilation

Using Edge Vent for Proper Attic Ventilation

Edge Vent by Air Vent, Inc.Depending upon a home’s age or builder, the design of the rafters and overhang may have more to do with the lifespan of a roof and home comfort than you might assume.  Is your air conditioner running overtime in the summer yet your home is never quite as comfortable as you like?  Maybe the 20 year roof begins curling and buckling at 1o years, leaving you scratching your head?

Poor attic ventilation might be a contributor or the main problem with your home.

Getting back to roof design, the ideal ventilation will have vents under the eaves to draw fresh air, circulate, and exit through a ridge vent, helping reduce both excessive heat in the summer and moisture condensation.  Unfortunately, some roof designs do not have adequate overhang or sit low across the top plate of the wall, eliminating any chance for air passage between roof sheeting and plate.

Better Attic Ventilation With Edge Vent

While traditional ventilation may not be possible, Air Vent, Inc. has designed a highly-effective solution to ensure proper circulation for these cramped eave situations.  Their installation video does a great job of explaining the “what” and “how” of edge vent installation.

Why Proper Attic Ventilation and Insulation Is Critical

attic-inspection-is-key-to-understanding-the-roof
Many of our customers ask “why do you need to look in my attic?”

Proper attic ventilation and insulation is critical!

The truth is 50% of your roof is comprised of the underside of the roof. A roof’s performance is largely predicated on ventilation, both intake and exhaust.

See our pictures gallery at our website under Residential Roofing. Oftentimes we inspect the attic and find insufficient insulation. If there exists insulation, many times it runs all the way to the end of the attic and is clogging airflow from the soffit into the attic. This can be prevented by installing inexpensive baffles found at all big box stores. If there is not enough insulation, the contractor can notify the customer who can then add insulation and save on utility bills.

Next, an attic inspection is critical before giving an estimate or starting the work as most often deteriorated decking can be observed. This is important because it allows the contractor to give an accurate bid to replace the bad decking and the customer time to budget money for the replacement instead of being surprised with the added cost the day the old roof is removed. While there are many additional reasons for an attic inspection, this short list will help you determine if your roofer is qualified by them asking to inspect your attic and will save you from many surprise expenses during the re-roofing process.
